The Unseen Photographs of Joseph James, Farmer of Caldbeck

Every now and again, a box of ephemera comes across my desk containing something really special. This week, I was sifting through a bunch of papers, and hit a particularly rich seam of farming photographs from the 1920s and 30s. They came from the house of Joseph James, who farmed at Nether Row Hall, Caldbeck until he retired in 1941 (and I know that date because the pile also contains the auction catalogue from his retirement sale of stock).

There are just 30 or so photos, but they are just so vivid and full of history, it almost hurts to look at them. What's more, some of them come with their negatives...

Here's a selection of them: please forgive the quick and dirty photos-of-photos, which doesn't do them justice. The first couple are printed as postcards (though were never, as far as I can find out, commercially available), the rest are smaller snaps.

These photos (and the rest of the batch) are FOR SALE as a lot: £40. Contact me if you're interested.

The Penrith Herald, 1860, with a 2016 makeover...

On Saturday, November 17th 1860, The Penrith Herald newspaper's front page, as was the norm for that time, was full of ads. John Bell for example was busy announcing the opening of his new drapery, with its "lowest possible prices".

In 2016, local artist Ken Martin has created a limited edition print of that front page, with sketches of the town over the top. I rather like it. If you'll allow me my own brief advert, you can see the print, and a lot more besides, in the View Two Gallery, which has now opened at The Brunswick Yard (which is also home of course to Withnail Books' Little Shop).

X-Wings over Derwentwater: Star Wars in the Lake District

Star Wars: The Force Awakens has finally been released, and has predictably smashed records worldwide. I went to see it on Friday night in Penrith, and was very happy to be feel like a seven year-old again. It is a proper Star Wars film. (And without going into spoilers, one rather major event in the plot was predicted on this very blog nearly a year ago...)

It's not just Withnail and I... the Lake District is now firmly on the list of must-visit Star Wars locations: as this brilliantly put together video shows...
